Government Incentives Announced For New Apprenticeship Starts

New £2000 & £1500 Incentives For All New Apprenticeship Starts

Last week Chancellor Rishi Sunak announced that all employers, who recruit new employees and start them on an apprenticeship programme, from 1st August 2020 to 31st Jan 2021, will receive financial incentives from the government as a thank you. There is no limit to the number of new recruits and there are NO age restrictions for new starters.

How does the process work?

New employees must have a contract of employment with a start date between 1st August 2020 and 31st January 2021 (inclusive) to be eligible. And employers cannot claim the incentive for anyone previously employed with them during the last 6 months.

There are two types of incentive:

  • Employers receive £2000 for a new starter aged 16-24 years old
  • Employers receive £1500 for a new starter aged 25 +

The employer will be responsible for making the claim, which will be paid by the government in two equal instalments, at 3 months and 12 months from the start date of the employee.

Recruitment Options

Employers can directly recruit themselves, using the usual channels – online adverts, recruitment agencies, recommendations etc. Or they can ask an apprenticeship training provider to do the recruitment for them.

The Apprentice Academy offers a recruitment and apprenticeship service, which specifically targets recent school and college leavers. It is a very popular service, used by hundreds of employers and students throughout the northwest.

Now is the ideal time for employers to recruit school leavers, as there are many high calibre students who have recently left school and keen to start an apprenticeship programme.

The Apprentice Academy have apprenticeship programmes available in Accountancy, Business Administration, Property Management, Procurement and Management.
