How to answer ‘What is your biggest weakness?’

One of the increasingly popular questions to be asked at your interview is ‘What is your biggest weakness?’

If there is one question that will put an unprepared candidate off balance it’s this one! We are all used to talking about our strengths, but how do you admit to a weakness? There is nothing at all wrong with a weakness, everyone has them, but what you need to do here is find a way to answer the question positively and showcase your outstanding abilities.

Is being a perfectionist your weakness? Can you not rest until you have got things spot on? Brilliant! This means you’ll have the skills to complete all tasks to the best of your ability and will easily follow company procedure. You should give examples of how your weakness is actually a strength, don’t be afraid to admit it, just have a positive twist.

The worst thing you can do is answer the question saying ‘I don’t have any weaknesses’ this indicates that you are not self-reflective. Employers want you to be honest with them, they know that nobody’s perfect and they want to see that you are willing to help improve your weaknesses. How will you grow if you are unaware of what you need to work on?

Hopefully this has given you a bit of advice on how to answer this question, so you get no nasty surprises and you are calm, confident and prepared. For more insight why not have a read of this post by Mashable which also links to some other great resources.
