Who is the Data Technician programme for?

This development programme covers the fundamentals of how to best work with data effectively and maximise its potential for business purposes.

It has been designed for employees who work within any role or department, who use data to produce business information and reports; or for employees looking to start a career in data analysis. Typical departments may include HR, Finance, Marketing, Sales, Procurement and Logistics.

Current trends show that employees who enroll on this programme have the following data experience already:

  • 43% of have 0 -11 months data experience.
  • 29% have 1 – 3 years’ data experience.
  • 28% have 4 years + data experience.

The great thing about the course is that it is very flexible and can be tailored to meet the needs of each individual and their employer.

To meet the apprenticeship requirements to do this programme, employees must be in a role that enables them to create data sets (usually in Excel), manipulate data using formulas, v look ups etc. and then convert this data into visual displays and dashboards.

  • How to extract, collate, validate, clean and format data.
  • How to manage, share and store data.
  • How to blend and combine data.
  • Data quality and compliance issues
  • How to use basic statistical methods to process and analyse data.
  • An introduction to database design and data modelling using SQL.
  • How to use algorithms to identify trends and patterns.
  • How to use visualisation techniques like Power BI and Tableau
  • Understanding Artificial Intelligence (A.I) tools and how to best use them with data

Costs and funding

Employers paying the apprenticeship levy can use their funds to pay for this programme.

Smaller organisations with an annual payroll bill of less than £3 million per year will need to contribute 5% towards the cost of the apprenticeship for employees aged 22 +. The government will cover 100% of the cost for employees aged 16-21 (New mandate from 1st April 2024).

Eligibility criteria for employees to do an Apprenticeship:

  • The employee must be aged 16 or above (there is no upper age limit)
  • The employee can work full or part time hours
  • The employee works for a company in England
  • The employee spends > 50% of their time working in England (remote and hybrid workers included)
  • The employee has some gaps in their knowledge and skill that relates to their occupational role
  • The employee has the right to work in England
  • The employee has spent the last 3 years living in England
